G.I. Dave’s Cartoon Realism: Silly or Gritty? “Jungle Trap”

Story by @G_I_DAVE
Alright Joe Friends, huddle up!
We’re diving into G.I. Joe Season 1 Episode 10, “Jungle Trap.” I remembered this one as “the Recondo episode” and that’s pretty much still true. Not the wildest sci-fi outing, not the goofiest, but one of those stand alones that actually tries to look like a jungle patrol, until the lava machine shows up and the cartoon physics take the wheel. As a kid I just wanted to see Recondo fire his M14. As an adult? Rewatching it now, you can see the bones of a decent small-team insertion and a few legit jungle-warfare spots sitting right next to the usual Sunbow nonsense. Let’s peel it back like we do!

The Market Meet and the Double Ambush
Recondo, Duke, Scarlett, and Rock ’n Roll are in some unspecified Indian market town to pick up Dr. Shakur, the guy who built the Vulcan Machine—a device that can tap Earth’s molten lava and theoretically turn any city into a volcanic parking lot. Didn’t realize how many crazy “machines” Cobra had, but here’s another!
Spy type meeting, with code phrases under a red umbrella, briefcase clutched tight, the whole spy-movie handshake. Recondo even gives the doctor props for turning down Cobra’s millions. Solid setup. Then Zartan, disguised as a snake charmer with a video-screen cobra robot, rats them out and Cobra hits the marketplace.

The first ambush is chaotic street fighting. The team is caught right in the open, and it should have been a slaughter , but Cobra troopers shoot worse than Stormtroopers it seems. Scarlett tries to cover the scientist and accidentally shoves him straight into a Cobra trooper’s arms. She eats a knockout, this animation is really decent. Cobras grab Shakur and peel out on a Water Moccasin. Classic “protect the principal, principal still gets snatched” moment. The Joes chase, Zartan (still in disguise) points them down an alley “shortcut,” and boom—second ambush. Two HISS tanks blocking the exit, Dreadnoks waiting. Snake Eyes drops off a rooftop like he was parked there the whole time, disarms Buzzer, and helps Scarlett clean up Torch and Ripper. Scarlett then puts an incendiary arrow into a HISS and blows a hole so they can run. Tactical take: layered ambush with a human intelligence asset (Zartan) feeding real-time info is actually pretty gangster for this show. Using the environment and a disguise to funnel the Joes into a killbox? That’s how you do it. The rooftop ninja drop and the magic exploding arrow? Cartoons, right?

Insertion, Shoot-Down, and the Jungle Walk
Recondo, being the only guy who talks to the locals, figures Cobra took over an ancient snake-cult temple three days’ march deep in the jungle. They decide air insertion is the only way. Seems legit, Recondo said it would be a 24 hour jungle march. Cobra Commander slaps a mind-control slave crown on Shakur (because of course) and greets the incoming birds with a swarm of FANGs. Cobra really loves their “mind tiara’s” don’t they? BONUS..we got a view of the GOAT of all Joe vehicles, the APC!!

I LIKE BIG STACHS AND I CAN NOT LIE
I’LL ONLY HELP YOU IF YOU MAKE ME A PRINCESS

The Chopper dogfight happens. Joes knock a bunch down, then both lead Dragonflies get smoked and crash in the jungle. Everybody walks away like they bounced off a mattress. Cobra Commander watches on his monitor and starts flipping trap switches like he’s playing a video game.

Now we’re in Recondo’s world!
This is the best stretch of the episode. Recondo takes point. Scarlett hits a tripwire, Recondo yanks her back. Rock ’n Roll falls in a pit, Snake Eyes pulls him out. A rhino comes charging out of a cage. Duke’s about to light it up, Recondo just waves a stick, turns the animal, and walks it right off a cliff into the river. That’s the money shot. That’s a jungle warfare specialist using the environment instead of burning ammo. Later Cobra drops hyenas on them. Recondo tells everybody to hold fire and head for the river so they don’t waste rounds. Duke then triggers a snare and hangs upside-down with the hyenas circling. Snake Eyes ignores the “stay put” order, drops in, and fights the pack off. Duke thanks him and immediately chews him out for disobeying. That’s the closest this show ever gets to real small-unit friction: the commando does the heroic thing, the team leader still has to maintain discipline. I actually liked that part. Getting gored by a pack of hyenas really hits different as an adult, eh?

I SMELL A LASER TRAP!

Yup, LASERTRAP, I knew it

Rule 32 , go RIGHT if it’s a lasertrap
DOGMEAT!

HOLY SHIT! you guys seeing this!?!

GET YOUR PHONE! WORLDSTAR!!

GTFO…

The Hijack and the Infiltration
They reach the river and the Water Moccasin shows up with Copperhead and four troopers. Snake Eyes and Duke do the old “we surrender” diversion while the other three hit from the rear. They drop the crew, steal the uniforms, stick Snake Eyes in the “prisoner” role, and make Copperhead drive them to the temple. At the gate they sell some story about sleeping sickness being contagious so the officer lets them in without a second look. That’s textbook captured-vehicle infiltration and a decent social-engineering play. For a cartoon, it’s one of the cleaner “we’re wearing their stuff now” sequences, and it’s cool to hear Copperhead, and see a little action from him.

Inside they overhear Cobra Commander pick Los Angeles for the demonstration shot (Rock ’n Roll’s hometown, because the writers needed a personal hook). They charge the room. Zartan uses the doctor as a human shield. Scarlett blows a hole in the ceiling, sunlight hits Zartan, and he freaks out and runs. Rock ’n Roll yanks the slave crown off. Cobra Commander gloats that they still have the machine. Duke just shoots the damn thing. It goes haywire, taps the lava under the temple, and now everybody’s running from a river of molten rock. Zartan peels out on his swamp sledge complaining about the sun. Cobra Commander bails on another Water Moccasin. The Joes dump unconscious Copperhead in the river, steal the boat, and link up with Wild Bill, Ripcord, and Cutter on the WHALE for the sunset ride home.

This this is HUUUUUGE

Ok…START BLASTIN!!

Final Verdict: Silly or Gritty?
Mix. Leans silly once the superweapon and the lava show up, but the middle third is one of the more grounded patrol sequences in Season 1, that I’ve seen so far. Watching a Joe team march through the Jungle is awesome, and the traps were definitely inspired by movies and Vietnam lore.
Gritty / SOLID:
Recondo actually functioning as a jungle specialist—local intel, ammo discipline, using a rhino as a weapon instead of shooting everything that moves.
Layered ambush in the market and the alley. Zartan as a live recon asset.
Small-team shoot-down survival, movement under observation, and a proper diversion + flank on the Water Moccasin.
Disguise infiltration and the “contagious disease” bluff at the gate.
Duke chewing Snake Eyes out after the rescue. That’s real team-leader stuff.
Collateral and personal stakes (LA is Rock ’n Roll’s city) without turning it into a soap opera.
Silly / Cartoon:
Two helicopter crashes, zero injuries, everybody just stands up and keeps walking.
Mind-control slave crown that makes the scientist build the doomsday device while a single tear rolls down his cheek.
Shooting the Vulcan Machine causes the temple itself to start erupting lava. Sure.
Zartan’s sunlight allergy / “I hate the sun” escape.
Incendiary arrow one-shotting a HISS tank.
Snake Eyes parked on a rooftop in an Indian market like he had a reservation.
“Sleeping sickness” as a valid access badge.
This one’s a good example of what the Sunbow show could do when it remembered the Joes had actual military occupational specialties. Recondo gets to be Recondo for twenty minutes. Then the lava machine happens and we’re back in toy-commercial land. Still one of the better “get in, get the scientist, blow the McGuffin, get out” episodes they made. The jungle walk and the vehicle hijack are the parts worth keeping if you are looking for the gritty, but hey, we got some SOKID Recondo action, and the APC was in it!
Yo Joe!
